Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants)

Typically requested to enhance breast size and shape, breast enlargement surgery can help women enjoy a more proportionate and contoured figure and increased self-confidence. Breast implants come in a range of shapes and sizes, and the breast augmentation procedure can be achieved in a number of ways . Breast enlargement surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia and may cause temporary bruising, swelling, discomfort, and numbness. Most patients return to work and normal activities in one to two weeks.

Renowned Illinois breast augmentation surgeon Michael A. Horn, M.D., provides patients at his Chicago practice with superior breast enlargement surgery. Dr. Horn meets with each patient to thoroughly discuss their goals and concerns, preparing a treatment plan that is tailored to their individual needs. Because Dr. Horn specializes in breast augmentation, his patients enjoy the confidence that comes with being in the hands of a skilled, caring professional with an eye for balance and beauty. His expertise is essential when deciding factors like breast implant type, size, and placement, as well as incision location.

High Profile vs. Moderate Profile

At our Chicago, Illinois center, we understand that breast enlargement surgery is a personal decision and that individual goals vary. Dr. Horn brings a unique combination of experience, surgical skill, and personal attention to every procedure. He can help determine if high profile breast implants, which produce more outward projection or moderate profile breast implants, which allow a more conservative shape and appearance, are right for you based on your body type and goals. Dr. Horn is extremely experienced working with both high and moderate profile implants to create a balanced, attractive, feminine shape.

Under Muscle vs. Above Muscle

Breast implants may be placed either below or above the pectoralis (chest) muscle. However, Dr. Horn typically prefers to place the implant under the chest muscle for exceptional breast enhancement results. The risk of capsular contracture is nearly eliminated when the implant is placed under the muscle, and the look is much more natural than when it is placed above the muscle. Breast implants are proven safe, and it has been clearly shown that they do not interfere with the detection of breast cancer during mammograms.

Incision Location

The location of breast augmentation incisions influences the size and type of scars that will develop. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages which will be discussed during your consultation at our Illinois center. Based on your personal preference, body type, and goals, breast augmentation surgeon Michael A. Horn, M.D. can recommend the incision location that is most appropriate for you.

There are four possible incision locations:

  • Transaxillary (armpit incision)
  • Areola (nipple incision)
  • Inframammary fold (crease incision)
  • TUBA (navel incision)

Breast Lift

Mastopexy, or breast lift, is commonly performed to improve the appearance and shape of drooping or sagging breasts in women who have experienced loss of volume in their breast tissue due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. Dr. Horn can remove excess skin, reposition the nipple, and recontour the breast, creating a more lifted, youthful, and shapely figure. Typically performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia, mastopexy can cause temporary swelling, numbness, and bruising. Most patients are able to return to daily activities in about one week.

At our Chicago, Illinois center, breast lift may be performed alone or in conjunction with breast enlargement surgery based on your individual goals and needs. Dr. Horn can help each patient determine what choice is best for her.

Breast Reduction

Reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce overly large breasts to a more comfortable size and contour. Such surgery is indicated when unusually large breasts cause pain in the shoulders, back, and lower back. Other undesirable side effects in oversized breasts involve improper posture and brassiere straps cutting into the shoulders. Overly large breasts often interfere with normal physical activity. Typically, the desired result is smaller, better shaped breasts that are proportioned with the rest of your body.

The most common surgical method of performing a reduction mammoplasty uses a three-part incision. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third is a horizontal incision beneath the breast which follows the natural curve of the breast crease. In some situations, the horizontal incision is omitted. After the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed, the nipple and areola are shifted or transposed to a higher position while preserving their blood supply

After surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in a gauze dressing and supported by a surgical bra. Loss of breast or nipple sensation is possible, but, usually is not permanent. You should avoid strenuous exercise for a few weeks. You should be able to return to work within two weeks.
